The resort of Nendaz (actually, Haute-Nendaz) is one of Switzerland’s and Europe’s best kept secrets. It is a large village, with a thriving yet down-to-earth ‘local’ charm that sets it apart from the more hyped-up purpose-built resorts.

The Thinking Man’s Verbier
Nendaz is in the French-speaking canton of Valais, and attracts visitors from all over Europe and the world. It is a very Swiss village, and although there are now a handful of British-owned businesses and chalets in the village, it has managed so far to resist the sort of growth experienced in recent decades by its more built-up neighbour, Verbier.

The village sits at 1400m in the heart of the Four Valleys, Switzerland’s largest ski area with 412km of pistes and some of the world’s best off-piste and backcountry terrain. The scenery around Nendaz is outstanding and the skiing is varied, with something for everyone. Being centrally located in the Four Valleys, Nendaz offers you the opportunity of skiing not only in Nendaz itself but also in Verbier to the West, and Veysonnaz and Thyon to the East. There are four excellent ski schools that cater to all levels of ability, and four or five well-equipped hire shops for you to obtain equipment. There is a great selection of slopes from beginners’ to experts’, and the vertical drop from the glacier-covered Mont Fort at 3330m back to the village is just short of 2km.

Nendaz for non-skiers
For the non-skier, Nendaz offers activity or relaxation in equal measure. There is a skating rink and climbing tower for the more intrepid, or a selection of coffee houses and shops for those who prefer a quieter stay. There are also a number of walks and cross-country tracks around the village, and snow-shoe hire is available if you would like to venture off the beaten track on foot.

Nendaz is lively all year round. From May to December the ski shops become mountain biking and hiking shops, selling the complete range of apparel and accessories. You can also hire mountain bikes for your visit just as easily as hiring skis in the winter. There are countless bike tracks around the village, not to mention the thrills of descending from the top of the lift system back to the village. Nendaz also has a public swimming pool (outside and adjoining lawns for sunbathing), and tennis courts which can be booked. The central park area includes a basketball court and beach volleyball court, and a large play area exists for younger family members.
